Be real.

Have you ever noticed how the Scriptures stress the need for reality? The Apostle John, for instance says "let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth" (1 John 3:18). John is appealing here for reality. For him there is only light and darkness and no twilight; he sees only the true and the false, the real and the unreal and allows for no neutrality.

The Lord Jesus Christ used very strong language against unreality and make-believe. He denounced the Scribes and Pharisees in words of fearful severity and called them 'hypocrites '- those who only acted a part.

In the letters to the seven churches in Revelation the bankruptcy of the church at Sardis is thoroughly Dollar signexposed. It had a name to live and was dead (Rev. 3:1). This church had acquired a reputation as a progressive and prosperous church; it was furthermore a veritable hive of activity. There was no shortage of money or manpower. However, outward appearances proved to be very deceptive. It was as someone has aptly said, ‘no more than an ecclesiastical corpse.’

We must seek to recognize the difference between the outward appearance and the inward reality. The Bible devotes many pages to this fundamental theme. We should remember that the devil loves unreality and seeks to encourage it. We need to recall that there are such things as unreal repentance, as in the case of Saul in the Old Testament and Judas in the New Testament; and unreal faith, as in the case of Simon Magus. There is also such a thing as unreal love. The Apostle Paul says "let love be without dissimulation" or hypocrisy (Romans 12:9)

Nothing is so common today as unreality in religion and at the same time nothing so foolish. If we would not be put to shame at the last great day let us beware of unreality.

The Apostle Paul once gave some very practical advice to his readers - "examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith" (2 Corinthians 13:5). He was urging them to be firm with themselves to see if their faith was just a matter of the head or of the heart. We could not do better than to follow his advice. Let us pray that God will graft His Word inwardly in our hearts.
