The Gospel

The Gospel

As beautiful as the scene from God's creation is in the above picture, it drastically pales in comparison to the beauty of God's redemption of His people.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the central theme and message of the Bible. It is a message that has been proclaimed since the fall of mankind (Genesis 3:15) and has been authenticated by the indisputable and historical fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (Acts 17:31).

The Bible is, in essence, God's revelation of Himself and what He has done in order that sinners can be reconciled to Him. The gospel, therefore, begins with God.

1. Who God Is

Almighty God has created mankind and everything else for His own glory (Genesis 1:1, 26-27, 31). Revelation 4:11 says, "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." God is the sovereign Creator of all things.

That means the one true and eternal God created mankind. Mankind did not create or invent the idea of the one true and eternal God. He is the only being without a beginning. All people inherently know that He exists and all people are accountable to Him as their Creator whether or not they believe in Him or like Him. (see Psalm 19 & Romans 2:14-15)

God has also revealed Himself to be holy and just. God describes Himself in this way in Isaiah 6:3 "Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory." God reveals Himself in Deuteronomy 32:4 in this way, "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."

His holiness means that He is perfectly pure, without sin, and will not tolerate impurity. His ways being judgement and He being just means that He will not tolerate injustice, but will always execute justice in accordance with His perfect character.

2. What Every Person Has Done Against God

Every person has sinned and rebelled against God by breaking His perfect and holy law. The first man, Adam, sinned against God and represented all of mankind in that sin. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" Romans 5:12.

So all people have sinned in Adam and are therefore born sinners, but all people have also committed sin personally. "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23. "For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not." Ecclesiastes 7:20.

That does not mean that people do not do good things in this world, but the reality is that although people do good things they also do bad things in thought, word, or deed. Sin is the breaking of God's perfect & holy law in thought, word, or deed. God identifies what sin is in 1 John 3:4, "sin is the transgression of the law."

The law of God referred to in 1 John 3:4 is found in Exodus 20:3-17. There God has given us His specific and unchanging moral commandments that every person fails to obey. The Lord Jesus Christ highlights the degree of obedience God’s law requires in Matthew 5:27-28.

He says there, regarding the 7th commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

The 6th commandment is highlighted similarly in 1 John 3:15 which says, “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”

This means that, in God’s sight and according to His standard of righteousness, to look with lust is to break the 7th commandment, and to be unlawfully angry to the point that you hate someone is to break the 6th commandment. The same degree of obedience is required for all of God’s commandments.

3. What God Will Do To Guilty & Rebellious People

God, as a perfectly just and holy God, will rightfully punish sinners (criminals) in this life and ultimately for eternity in hell. Romans 6:23 & Hebrews 9:29 say "the wages of sin is death", "it is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgement." (see also Revelation 20:11-14).

No amount of good works that you perform can compensate for the amount of sin you have committed. Good deeds cannot cancel out bad deeds. That is not how justice works. The criminal must be held accountable for his crimes. Someone who commits murder, rape, or theft cannot simply do good things in society after the crime and expect to be let off the hook for the penalty his or her crime deserves.

4. What God Has Done For Guilty & Rebellious People

For His own glory and because God is merciful He has made one way, not multiple ways, for hell-deserving sinners to be forgiven and reconciled to Him. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6 (see also Matthew 7:13-14).

"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." 1 Timothy 1:15. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, entered into this world by becoming a man and lived a perfect life in complete and total obedience to the law of God. He then went to the cross as a substitute, the righteous for the unrighteous (1 Peter 3:18).

He had the sins of His people imputed to Him, that is, legally made His responsibility, and then suffered the just wrath of God upon the sins of all those for whom He came to save. He satisfied the justice of God so that those who will trust in Him can be fully reconciled to God and live with Him for eternity. For this reason, God says in Romans 3:26 that He is "just and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus."

Isaiah says it this way concerning the cross work of Jesus Christ, Isaiah 53:5, " he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." He suffered and died upon the cross, was buried, and then rose from the dead three days later proving to the entire world that His sacrifice was accepted by God the Father and that He conquered death on the behalf of those for whom He died. (see Matthew 28, 1 Corinthians 15:3-6, & Acts 17:31)

Those that, by the grace of God, trust in Christ alone for salvation are justified before God by having Christ's righteousness imputed to them, that is, legally put to or credited to their account by God. In this way, they become, legally, as righteous as Christ Himself and are viewed in this way by God because of their spiritual union with Christ. God says in 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For he (God) hath made him (Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (Christ)."

5. What Guilty & Rebellious People Should Do In Response

God has promised in His word that whoever will confess their sins to Him, repent of, that is, turn away from breaking His law, and believe, that is, fully trust in the gospel of Jesus Christ then they will be saved.

Isaiah 45:22, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else." Romans 10:9, 13 "if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Acts 3:19 "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out".

6. What True Salvation Looks Like

This gift of salvation by faith alone in Christ alone will transform anyone that has truly received it from God. Faith that does not produce good works is dead or not genuine. So says the word of God in James 2:17, "Even so Faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone."

The Bible says that when someone is truly saved their heart will be changed and they will be made a new creature in Christ (see Ezekiel 36:26 & 2Corinthians 5:17). This is what Jesus called in John 3:3 being "born again". He uses very strong langauage there and says, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." The new birth is an act of God. It is what God does to a sinner when He imparts spiritual life to a spiritually dead person and enables them to trust in Christ to the saving of their soul.

One indisputable mark of the new birth is new obedience to the law of God out of love for God. Jesus said in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Salvation is not based on our obedience to the law and a born again person will not perfectly obey God's law. Though that is the case, a born again person will no longer want to disobey or be comfortable disobeying God's law when they inevitably do. 1 John 2:3-4 "And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments."

A Personal Plea

Perhaps you have never heard this message or perhaps you have. Either way, if you have not personally repented of your sins and trusted in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, Lord of your life, and the only Savior of sinners then I plead with you to do so now to the glory of God and for your eternal good. Run away from your sin, run to the Savior, and ask Him to save you! Jesus said in John 6:37, "him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." That is the unchanging truth of the unchanging God. "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8
